Obsidian: @xi-Existential Intelligence/Alignment Is Inevitable – Working Note.md
Quick summary
I coined the line “We’re going to get alignment one way or another — whether we like it or not.”
It crystallises a recurring meme (“AGI is coming regardless”) but shifts focus from capability to alignment:
some control structure will emerge; the open question is whose values and at what cost.
Key tensions
- Inevitable ≠ desirable – The existence of an alignment regime is certain; its valence is open.
- Historical echoes – Sacred narratives, codified law, bureaucratic ledgers, markets, mass media: every tool aligned societies and oppressed some subgroup.
- Speed & autonomy delta – AI compresses centuries of social feedback into hours and can act without continuous human oversight.
- Care for vs care about – Posting pledges ≠ stewarding systems; stewardship decides whether we flourish or become “livestock.”
Podcast hooks (Existential Intelligence Podcast [reference])
- Cold-open – Deliver the quote, ask listeners to guess the speaker, then reveal it’s my framing.
- Clip collage – 15–30 s snippets of Altman (TED 2023), Hassabis (I/O 2025) using “inevitable” language.
- Segment arcs
- Historical flashback – Narmer palette, Code of Hammurabi, Qin ledgers, Roman orthodoxy, Venetian bookkeeping, WW-II nukes.
- DSA spectrum – Byzantine Greek fire → U.S. nuclear monopoly (1945-49).
- Containment vs Stockholm – nuclear arms control, social-media lock-in, possible AI co-dependence.
